It’s about time I updated my blog.

Been away writing exams, finished that now waiting for my results which if I pass then I become an Electronics and Electrical Engineer.

A lot has happened in tech. Nigeria with the help of China just launched a satellite into space, don’t know the exact sat type but heard it’s a comms sat that would be controlled from the capital Abuja, a lot of potential for investors to capitalise on the stability of the Nigerian economy and govt.

The US senate on numerous occasions took hearings about the net neutrality issue.

Google has revamped it’s start page, plus tweaked the search engine.A notable feature is the ability to search within YouTube videos. Speaking of YouTube Scoble blogged about the importance of YouTube to google and how it is paying off, for $1.6 billion Google got a bargain. the next US presidential debate is going to be broadcast on YouTube.

Also Google is buying out it’s rivals in the online ads business.

Finally the new Apple iphone is scheduled for release on 29 June in the states. I wonder when and if it would reach UK shores.

One more thing I take up a position in the IT department at Credit Suisse.

Google is annoucing that it has offically acquired YouTube, more here.

in my last post I talked about the copyright infringiing issues that may follow the acquisition. While I am officailly on the fence on this one I have spent the last week pondering the ramifications and realised that contrary thinking may prevail. What I’m saying here is that while majority of the crowd focuses on the negatives plus the fact that these are desperate times (as Charlie Robinson says) especially those trying to get into

And so it happens. The Inquirer is reporting that Google is about to acquire YouTube. If this should happen, surely this would be the year of the merger. Google is rumoured to have offered $1.6 Billion which is a solid figure given the impending copyright issues that could arise in the near future. MySpace has a better business model and could easily kill YouTube.
Would Microsoft throw in the towel(s) and realise that they are now just another firm that cannot seem lead through innovation, in-fact the only trend they have spotted is on-line collaboration using sharepoint and office live (really a possible alternative revenue model).

A Gartner report suggests that the number of desktops being sold is in decline while the number of laptops sold is increasing, thus profit from software (mainly Operating System, OS) should remain fairly stable (also assuming that the desktop decline is due to people abandoning them in favour of laptops). One can also argue that the emerging world market would help buck this trend and help increase revenue. However we should not forget that most emerging world PC’s are sold for less than they do in the developed countries.

Yahoo has done well with yahoo mail, news and even inked deals with eBay but has failed to capitalise on the earlier success of launch. Yahoo could have easily turned this site into YouTube a couple of years ago. This year is a lesson that has innovation written all over.

It’s been almost 2 months since my last post. Work and other distractions have to blame but the good news is that I’m back. Inspired by my buddy Elisha Sulai who also has a blog, I decided to pick up where I left of.

Some things that have happened:

  • The American senate have dealt a huge blow to net neutrality by rejecting the proposed bill that I was talking about. Cnet has a nice article on the communications issues in the states.
  • The Piratebay was raided and has since resurfaced with a vengence, so they say.
  • Allofmp3.com was also knocked offline but has also resurfaced.
  • The world richest man just hot a whole lot richer. Warren Buffet, second on the Forbes rich list suddenly decides to give Bill Gates 85% of his wealth. That’s a cool $31 billion.
  • Bill Gates decides to call it quits as chairman of Microsoft also Robert Scoble leaves too to join a podcating start up.
  • Google released their version of on-line payment system, Google checkout, to rival paypal and aims to make shopping a one click affair. I don’t know if this would actually be a paypal killer but Ebay, Amazon and co must either be working on something or the end could be near for their businesses. Cnet has a review here
  • A site that lets people play with dolls, yes dolls was sold for a cool $6 million. Makes me wonder when I’m going to go public with my own killer product. Only time will tell…
  • Microsoft released the public beta versions of windows vista and office 2007. The deadline has passed for downloading or ordering the evaluation DVD but i’m sure one can still get a copy from a friend…
  • The world cup has already ended for some, shame, and continues for others. results here. France clearly out-classed (video) Brazil while Germany and France are tipped for the finals.
  • My results are out. Yes and I’m proud to say I did OK.
  • I start work as an intern in 7hrs.

Anybody have anything else to add?

New Interface for google video, but … January 31, 2006

Finally the folks at google are listening to the end users, by the way:the customer is always right. The videos are now packed neatly and the nasty f-ing drop down has gone. The interface has been overhauled.
But google realy has to do something about those prices. $14.00 for a movie is too much especially when you don’t even get the nicely coloured box. These prices don’t compare to what you would pay instore. Infact from amazon you can get a not so abused dvd copy for half the google price.
